Hey, if you're going to introduce a product category, you might as well come out swinging.
Pentax is entering the mirrorless market with much bravado, announcing the Pentax Q as the world's smallest and lightest interchangeable lens camera. It's hard to argue with the numbers, really - the shooter measures 1.2 x 2.3 x 3.9 inches and weighs 7.1 ounces with both battery and storage card in tow. It's got a 12.4 megapixel, 1/2.3-inch backlit CMOS sensor, all the manual control you'd expect from the product category, 21 scene modes, a variety of "creative modes," in-camera HDR, RAW support, 1080p 30fps video, and 5fps continuous shooting. Shutter speeds run between 1/2000 to 30, ISO from 200 to 6400, and most important of all, color options are black and white. On that back, we've got a 3.-inch LCD with a resolution of 460,000 dots.






The aptly-titled Q-mount is about one-third narrower than Pentax's K-mount, so in addition to the 47mm/F1.9 kit lens, the company is planning to introduce a separate 27.5-83mm zoom lens ($299.95), a 160-degree fish eye lens ($129.95), and two toy lenses (wide and telephoto; both $79.95). Other accessories include a shoe-mounted external viewfinder ($249.95) that offers framing marks for the standard lens.
Available first in Japan, the Pentax Q (and all aforementioned accessories) will hit stateside sometime this fall. The standard kit is expected to cost around $800 with a bundled 47mm/F1.9 lens.
