Yamaha has dipped a tentative toe into the custom waters: it's commissioned three top builders to work their magic on the venerable V-Max 'power cruiser'. The V-Max has been around since 1985, so it's due for a fillip-and that's exactly what Roland Sands (USA), Marcus Walz (Germany) and Ludovic Lazareth (France) have provided. Although Yamaha has called the initiative "Hyper Modified", the mods are relatively mild. I'm guessing the builders were told not to stray too far from the essence of the original. The version we're looking at here comes from Lazareth, who plays at the more extreme end of the custom field-and has a penchant for bolting superchargers onto his bikes.

Yamaha doesn't go into detail on Lazareth's modifications to the V-Max, other than revealing that it has been fitted with an LCD screen with a rear-view video link. There's no supercharger this time-probably a wise move, given that the V-Max is a handful as it is. Changes include new air intakes and headlight, a new radiator and chin scoop and tail section, and new exhaust cans.

Twingo

Small cars are not everyone's cup of tea, until it is customized to specific tastes. That is probably what Renault had in mind as they handed over the tiny Twingo for a 2012 makeover to a chef, a fashion designer, a British pop star and a German interior designer.

Each of these makeovers show how high luxury can be cozy replicated inside a tiny car. Showing the cars versatility, Michelin-starred Italian chef Davide Scabin came up with a "Fusilli Jerry" pasta interiors, French fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac gilded gave the car a French royal furniture makeover, singer and entrepreneur Nicola Roberts tried to make the car a portable recording studio-cum-dressing room (the studio is nestled in the back seat, while the dresser is set up in the front).

Finally, German designer Nils Holger Moormann decided to go with a wood floors library with a fireplace and a cozy sofa. Not a bad way to do up a ugly looking frog-eyed car from the 1990!

The Howrah Bridge in the Indian city of Kolkata is at risk ofcollapsing because the steel at its base is being corroded by human saliva.

Pedestrians who have been chewing betel leaf, areca nut and slaked lime have been spitting on the bridge's steel hangers, causing them to weaken. The red stains left by the paan mixture - a mild stimulant chewed throughout India - are caked around the metal casings of the bridge.

Authorities say the paan-laced spit has reduced the thickness of the bridge's hangers from six millimetres to three millimetres. In an attempt to save the bridge, port engineers have come up with the idea of covering the steel with fibreglass. Several years ago authorities were forced to begin regular clean up of bird droppings which were also corroding the bridge.

It has also been damaged before from a number of car and boat accidents. The cantilever suspension bridge opened in 1943 and spans more than 450 metres across the Hooghly River. It is thought to be the busiest of its kind in the world, with more than 100,000 vehicles crossing a day and more than 150,000 pedestrians pounding its walkways daily.

REUSE!!

A second proposal for the reuse and design of a silo on the island of zeeburgereiland, 'siloo o' by dutch practice NL architects is an indoor and outdoor world-class venue for climbing and mountaineering in amsterdam, the netherlands. while the team lost the initial competition for the project back in 2009, plans for an office building was abandoned for one of the three silos which created a new opportunity for the realization of the earlier scheme. the updated design features extrusions on its facade to provide outdoor overhangs as well as balconies.

Located adjacent to one another on a rectangular plot, the 42m-tall design is wrapped in a triangulated exterior which has been manipulated to create moments of extension. the silo was intentionally approached as a sculptural object to make transparent the individual identity and program of each storage tower. as the structure rises, the triangular motif results in glazed apertures, creating windows with views of the surrounding site.

The interior climbing space is a tapering cave which rises to a height of 20 meters. natural daylight is gained through a large window while an opening at the top leads in to the boulder room. the higher storeys accommodate office space for sports and climbing-related businesses. to create cohesion between the three autonomous structures, the plot is transformed into a continuous green carpet which has been raised at certain points as a three-dimensional park. ground-level boulders and playground surround the foot of the building, providing a dynamic public realm for the neighbourhood. other facilities such as a bar, library, information center, travel center, and a showroom are located on the ground level.

Nice!!

In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the United Arab Emirates National Day, a magically divine light show was orchestrated by Obscura Digital, a creative agency based in San Francisco, which developed the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Projections Project.

The company did its research and were clearly prepared to honor the rich history of Abu Dhabi in their light projections through their skilled employment of three-dimension mapping.

The beautiful floral and geometric designs found in the mosque's own architecture were echoed and heightened through the colorful light show. By configuring their forty-four projectors appropriately, they were able to illuminate the walls, four curved minarets, and twelve domes of the mosque without distorting the engaging projected designs.

2012

Hyundai has just announced that the 2012 Elantra, which will debut next Wednesday at the LA Auto Show, will achieve 40 miles per gallon on the highway and 29 mpg in the city. The engine behind these impressive numbers will be a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder producing 148 horsepower and 131 lb-ft of torque. We're checking on transmissions options, but a five- or six-speed manual and six-speed automatic are the safe bets.

40 mpg highway ratings are "the new black" for small cars these days, with other vehicles like the 2011 Ford Fiesta and 2011 Chevrolet Cruze achieving 40 mpg or more on the highway and letting everyone know about it in their marketing material. The difference between those American small cars and the new Elantra is that only particular models of the Cruze and Fiesta can reach 40 mpg - more specifically the Cruze Eco, which tops out at 42 mpg, and the Fiesta with a special SFE package. Every Elantra model will achieve 40 mpg, from the base model on up, which means that you won't have to pay extra for the privilege of joining the 40 mpg club.

Concept!!

The Dubai Autodrome will play host to a very special guest for the 2012 Dunlop 24 Hours of Dubai race.
In addition to the scads of GT3-spec BMW Z4s, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMGs, Ferrari 458 Italias and Porsche 911s, the pace car running in front of them will be none other than the Nissan Juke R.

The 480-horsepower GT-R/Juke mash-up hasn't made its debut in front of the public yet, so unless Nissan has a surprise up its sleeves before the race, which is scheduled for the weekend of January 12-14, this will be Juke R's coming out party. We won't be on hand to snag shots of the R in Dubai, but rumor has it that it could make its first Stateside appearance at the Chicago Auto Show.
